What Is a Lug Washer?

A lug washer is a thin, disk-shaped plate with a center hole used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener and prevent the head of the bolt or nut from gouging the surface of the lug seat.  Lug washer can be manufactured from metallic or non-metallic materials.  The appropriate lug nut washers will ensure that your lug nut will contact the seat securely.  Please call us at Coyote Accessories if you have any questions.

Do Lug Nuts Need Washers?

Most rims that use a lug nut that is shouldered should use washers.

What Happens If You Don’t Use a Washer?

Not using washers on your lug nuts can dramatically impact the installation causing false torque readings and cause damage to the lug nut seat.

Why Do We Use Car Wheel Nuts and Bolts with Washers?

Lug washers are commonly found on some vehicles as Original Equipment and aftermarket Mag Style wheels.  Washers have for multiple purposes. Some washers have a unique design, they are oblong in shape so they can be used on wheels that can accept different bolt patterns.  Failure to use washers will result in false torque reading causing the lug nut to loosen and wheel to come off resulting in injury or fatality.

Original Equipment applications require Lug Washers from the factory.  The washers found on these applications have a washer that is retained on the lug nut by a knurled band.  Commonly these are found on Toyota applications.  Removal of these washers will result in false torque reading causing the lug nut to loosen and wheel to come off resulting in injury or fatality.
